Hamad General Hospital
Fracture Liaison Service Hamad General Hospital (FLS) is responsible for identification, investigation and initiation of osteoporosis treatment for patients above 50 years presenting with fragility fractures to Hamad General Hospital or Bone and Joint center (BJC), the orthopedics outpatient department.
Patients identified includes those presenting to the Emergency department (ED) with any fragility fracture and getting admitted to the hospital for surgery and further management, or those that are referred to Orthopedics outpatient department from the ED itself.
At the BJC, we run a weekly FLS clinic where patients receive comprehensive education and counseling on various aspects related to osteoporosis. This includes information on the diagnosis of osteoporosis, strategies for fall prevention, guidance on muscle strengthening exercises, daily calcium requirements, lifestyle modifications, and information on osteoporosis medications.
The primary goal of the FLS service is to ensure that patients receive appropriate and timely treatment for osteoporosis and implement measures to prevent future fractures. This involves close monitoring of patients to ensure adherence to treatment and follow-up appointments.
The service is lead by the Rheumatology division headed by Dr Samar Al Emadi. The lead clinician running the service is Dr Nabeel Abdulla, Consultant Rheumatologist.
