Taiping General Hospital
Taiping Hospital is a government hospital located in Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. Taiping Hospital is the lead hospital in a cluster of 5 hospitals in the Northern Perak region, together serving a population of over 800,000 people.
We had compelling reasons to begin a fracture liaison service in Taiping. Perak was expected to become the oldest state in Malaysia, and in 2019, the town of Taiping was selected for the implementation of a pilot age-friendly city project.
To facilitate the implementation of the project, we've gathered a group of core stakeholders from the disciplines of Geriatrics, Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, Pharmacy, and Rehabilitation. We meet periodically to evaluate our progress and discuss ways to improve the service.
Our service officially began in May 2021, and consists of:
1. An acute hip fracture pathway, which follows the geriatric consultation model of Orthogeriatric care, and where the initial falls and fracture risk assessment and intervention are done.
2. An outpatient Bone Clinic, a follow-up to the acute hip fracture pathway, where the patients' falls and fractures risk are further evaluated and optimised.
