Maccabi Healthcare Services Fracture Liaison Service

Directed by Dr. Inbal Goldshtein, and lead clinician Dr. Vanessa Rouach, the Maccabi Healthcare Services Fracture Liaison Service has been running since 2017.

Maccabi Healthcare Services, one of the largest health funds in the world, covers 2.2 million members (25% of the Israeli market share) with a nationwide representative distribution. Since 1993, electronic medical records (EMR's) have been implemented in Maccabi, documenting all types of medical information in a central database containing comprehensive data on each patient.  This database provides systematic, quality data, of a stable population of patients across their lifetime.

During the recent years the Maccabitech team, directed by Professor Varda Shalev and Professor Gabriel Chodick, developed a unique osteoporosis registry1 using Maccabi's medical database and Assuta medical centers. This registry holds diagnoses, BMD values, major osteoporotic fractures and treatment patterns since the year 2000 to date, and it is automatically updated on a daily basis.

On 2017 Maccabi initiated a Fracture Liaison Service based on the Osteoporosis registry, while detecting specific subgroups of high-risk patients among the registry (so far over 14,000 patients).  The Maccabi Osteoporosis FLS uses a set of personalized alerts, quality measures and reports to support family physicians in fracture prevention.
