Centre Hospitalier Le Mans

The General Hospital of Le Mans is a single public hospital that serves 800,000 people. The FLS was initiated in 2010 as a cooperative effort between orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists, and associates dieticians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and geriatricians, targeting patients with a wrist or hip fracture. The assessment of these patients allows us to:
• measure bone mineral density
• identify vertebral fractures, secondary causes of osteoporosis, need for referral to the dentist
• assess need for drug-treatment
• assess need for access to falls prevention services

The results of the assessments are transmitted to the primary care physician and the patients are reviewed by our FLS to check that their treatment remains the most appropriate.

The first results of our FLS were presented in December 2011 at the Congress of the French Society of Rheumatology. An analysis of the 65 patients summoned allowed the following conclusions: 17% of patients do not show up at scheduled appointment when they had given their agreement, 51.8% of patients had a personal history of fracture, a monoclonal gammapathy has been identified in 5 patients (9.4%) including 1 at the stage of myeloma, drug treatment was initiated in 77% of patients.

The evolution of the FLS is towards inclusion of patients regardless of the site of their fracture and involving our staff of general practitioners. The coordinator of our FLS is Dr Bénédicte HAETTICH, rheumatologist (bhaettich@ch-lemans.fr).
