Airedale General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The Fracture Liaison Service at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust is situated in secondary care with a population of 200,000 people covering a wide area from West and North Yorkshire to East Lancashire, all close to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. The Fracture Liaison Service was started in October 2019.   Due to the Covid pandemic the service was paused for 5 months in both 2020 and 2021.

We systematically capture all fragility fractures for patients aged 50 and over from weekly reports provided from radiology for vertebral fractures, discharges with a fracture code, fracture clinic lists and daily from trauma admissions.  A bone health questionnaire and FRAX is performed then DXA and bloods are ordered, and appropriate treatment commenced.

2022 was a great year for us as we have managed to get a whole years’ worth of data on to the FLS-DB, and we are doing well.  We worked hard to make improvements in capturing vertebral fractures working collaboratively with our radiology colleagues.  In 2024 we have made huge improvements in the care we provide for our fractured femur patients so that the majority of patients now get IV zoledronic acid as first line treatment as per the NOGG recommendations.
