Italy launches National Registry of Fragility Fractures

The launch of the Italian "National Registry of Fragility Fractures" was announced on World Osteoporosis Day, celebrated in Rome on October 20. This groundbreaking initiative, developed in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, aims to enhance the prevention and management of osteoporosis in Italy. The registry, which will be operational from mid-January, represents a significant step forward in the fight against a disease that affects approximately five million Italians, with an increasing impact due to the aging of the population.
Every year, in Italy, over 500,000 fragility fractures are recorded, with serious consequences for patients’ quality of life and a significant increase in healthcare costs. With the increase in life expectancy, osteoporosis will become an even more significant challenge for the Italian healthcare system.
Professor Maria Luisa Brandi, President of FIRMO (Italian Foundation for Research on Bone Diseases), stated: “The National Registry of Fragility Fractures, developed in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, will allow us to collect fundamental epidemiological data on fractures, facilitating early diagnosis and more effective treatment. This tool will be essential to bring attention to fragility fractures and finally put the patient at the center of the diagnosis and treatment pathways."
The new registry will enable monitoring of the effectiveness of therapeutic and preventive interventions, offering a robust foundation for clinical decisions and targeted health policies.
Professor Brandi noted the importance of this significant milestone: "Beyond enhancing the evaluation of osteoporosis prevalence in our country, the Registry serves as a valuable tool for assessing the effectiveness of interventions targeting fragility fractures. It will play a crucial role in optimizing patient management, guiding informed decisions to address osteoporosis effectively at both individual and population levels."
