The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), under the auspices of the Capture the Fracture® (CTF) initiative and in collaboration with renowned Brazilian bone health experts, has released the report titled “Solutions for Fracture Prevention in Brazil.” The report provides an in-depth analysis of the current situation of fragility fractures in the country and highlights opportunities to improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis. Read report in Portuguese / Read report in English.

Fragility fractures, primarily caused by osteoporosis, are an increasing public health concern in Brazil. It is estimated that around 400,000 fragility fractures occur annually in the country, significantly affecting not only patients and their families but also the Brazilian healthcare system. These fractures are associated with high medical costs and loss of productivity, with estimated expenditures reaching 310 million USD in 2018.

The report warns that, without immediate action, the number of fractures is expected to increase by 60% between 2015 and 2030, due to the rapidly ageing population. Additionally, it reveals that approximately 60% of patients at risk of fractures in Brazil do not receive proper treatment, worsening the problem and increasing the risk of new fractures.

The report “Solutions for Fragility Fractures in Brazil” is the result of a collaborative effort between the IOF and a panel of Brazilian experts, who assessed current post-fracture care policies and proposed concrete recommendations tailored to the country’s needs.

Among the proposed solutions, the report emphasizes:

  • Prioritizing fragility fractures in national health policies.
  • Developing regional strategies to address the country’s socioeconomic and demographic differences.
  • Improving the implementation of Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), a proven model to reduce the incidence of re-fractures and improve osteoporosis management.

As part of the report’s launch, the IOF, along with its member society Associação Brasileira Ortopédica de Osteometabolismo (ABOOM) is promoting a joint social media campaign to raise awareness about the severity of fragility fractures and share the report's key messages with the Brazilian public.

The public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers are invited to access the full report to learn in detail about the policy recommendations and actions needed to address this growing issue in Brazil.
