The Santa Maria University Hospital in Lisbon is a public hospital serving a population of about 350.000 patients. The Osteoporosis Outpatient Clinic was founded in 2008 as a multidisciplinary clinic by Mário Mascarenhas and is now coordinated by Ana Paula Barbosa, both endocrinologists. It includes Endocrinology, Orthopedics, Physical Rehabilitation, Nutrition and Psychology.

Since 2012, it was included in the CTF best practice recognition program of IOF and has worked to improve best practices in the treatment of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures, and secondary prevention. It studies and treats all patients with osteoporotic fractures with defined protocols for secondary osteoporosis, DXA and vertebral Rx.

Since January 2020 the clinic is improving the organizational characteristics of the service, and is increasing the number of patients treated and followed up for secondary prevention through the participation of specialized nurses and registry.
