Middlemore Hospital

Counties Manukau Health has three hospital sites. Middlemore Hospital is the main hospital, with satellite sites being the Manukau Surgical Centre and Pukekohe Hospital.

Our FLS is Orthogeriatrician lead, and we have access to DEXA scans through our Bone Density Service as well as to Falls and Osteoporosis Clinic.

Our FLS is evolving and developing as appropriate, in response to the needs of our population, the clinical standards, methods of communication for improving bone health and long term management of our community. We have had an additional FLS coordinator and admin join our team from October 2021.

As mentioned, we have comprehensive case finding methods and receive daily electronic reports based on key word searches. These come from: ED;  Nursing handover (ward lists); Fracture Clinics (outpatient); and radiology reports (where vertebral fractures are identified).

Previously we were unable to capture patients who presented to primary care only (e.g. to peripheral accident and emergency clinics and who do not have follow-up at our Fracture Clinics). 

However now we are able to work with Accident Compensation Cooperation (ACC) to identify these missing patients and are able to ensure appropriate interventions is undertaken for all our patients
