Aneurin Bevan University Health Board

Aneurin Bevan Fracture Liaison Service (AB-FLS) review all eligible patients over the age of 50 within the ABUHB catchment area who have suffered a fragility fracture. ABUHB has a population catchment of 639,000 of this 287,406 are aged over 50 which is 44% of the catchment population.

ABUHB had an FLS which was previously managed by the Rheumatology team with the focus on patients under 75 and those requiring DXA imaging. Patients that did not require a DXA scan were advised by Primary care regarding a bone health care plan. However due to limited resources, the FLS service was only able to identify 20% of patients that required imaging (800 patients of the total expected 3780 patients annually). ABUHB were not able to undertake a follow-up as per the recommended national guidelines

Clinical Lead (Dr Inder Singh) for falls and bone health led the integration and developed partnership with the Rheumatology and shared the national agenda detailing how to improve the current FLS.

ABUHB Medical Division fully supported this initiative and funded two band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), three band 6 Nurses, one Band 4, 1.6 band 3, one Band 2 and a dedicated Band 8b Pharmacist (7.5 hours) to enhance AB-FLS and dedicated clinical leadership.
