Directed by lead clinician Dr. José R. Caeiro Rey, the Orthogeriatric and Fracture Liaison Service Unit of Santiago de Compostela University Hospital has been running since 2012, and 2015 respectively. This hospital is located in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and serves a population of around 465,000 people.
The Orthogeriatric Unit comprises a multidisciplinary collaboration of specialties which improves surgical, medical and functional outcomes in patients with osteoporotic hip fracture. The Fracture Liaison Service handles almost all the other fragility fractures, offering screening and secondary prevention to patients at risk of an osteoporotic fracture.
Dr. José R. Caeiro, Orthopaedics and Traumatology Head of Service and Associated Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Santiago de Compostela University, has been Coordinator of the Osteoporosis and Osteoporotic Fracture Study and Research Group of the Spanish Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SECOT-GEIOS). He is Member of the Spanish Society of Bone Metabolism and Mineral Research (SEIOMM), and is co-author of both SECOT-GEIOS and SEIOMM Clinical Practice Guidelines for the prevention and treatment of osteoporotic fractures.
